Abstract
Collapse of building structures is the main reason responsible for the casualties and property losses during the earthquake disaster. Therefore, it is important to improve the performance and anti-collapse ability of building structures to reduce the loss induced by earthquakes in the regions of high seismic hazard. One method to improve the ductility of shear wall is the introduction of slit in the wall. A slit is a narrow opening purposely introduced in a wall which divides the shear wall into two or more narrow sub walls . When subjected to earthquake loads the shear connector yields first and thus the ductility of the walls utilized. Also, architectural design leads to the existence of doors and windows within shear walls, such openings create regions of disturbed stress flow. Reasonable three dimensional finite element models were developed in this study to predict the seismic behavior of slit shear walls and shear wall with openings. Five shear wall models with different slit sizes are analyzed, five shear wall models with different opening sizes are analyzed .A model of a solid shear wall is also presented to compare the analysis results using Ansys15.
