Abstract

In low power application generally permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) are used. Because of their high perfor mance/cost ratio, the attention toward PMSM in variable speed application, is greater . Control of t orque, rotation speed and position for four quadrants and low speed operation, with high - performance dynamic behavio u r, are often required in industrial appl ications but they are sensitive from the standpoint of the control strategies reliability. Vector control based on field - oriented control (FOC) is one of the methods most investigated and discussed by many researcher and now it is an industry standar d . T ra ditional control methods based on FOC use position sensors result to be very expensive in electrical drive with low power. The aim of this paper is to show that sensorless control strategy based on MRAS approach can be applied successfully in PMSM drives w ith low cost. The results are obtained from comparison of two algorithms of vector control of PMSM: traditional FOC using position sensor and model reference adaptive system (MRAS) approach based on sensorless vector control . Based on results obtained, adv antages and disadvantages of the prop o sed control structures will be discussed.
