Abstract
This study investigates the adoption of big data among Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Somalia. The study highlights that while big data offers transformative potential in enhancing decision-making, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction, adoption levels remain limited due to systemic barriers such as high implementation costs, lack of technical expertise, and infrastructural inadequacies. The study employs a quantitative approach, analysing survey data from 200 SMEs across key sectors, including technology, agriculture, and retail. Findings reveal significant disparities in awareness and adoption, with the technology sector leading in both metrics. Perceived benefits, such as improved decision-making (Mean = 4.2) and customer insights (Mean = 4.0), underscore big data’s role in fostering competitive advantage, while challenges like data security concerns (Mean = 3.6) emphasise the need for robust support systems. This study provides actionable recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders to bridge the adoption gap and harness the potential of big data to drive SME growth in Somalia’s evolving digital economy.
