Remote sensing has been developed from earlier technologies such as surveying, photogrammetry, cartography, mathematics and statistics. In 1970s, first remote sensing satellite Landsat - 1 was launched which provided continuous observation of Earth’s land areas. In early decades of 21 st century, owing to internet availabili ty, public access to remote sensed data was available when Google earth was first launched. Today, remote sensing has become a very sophisticated procedure to monitor Earth’s environment. This paper briefly covers the remote sensing basics, types of the me thodologies adopted for the procedure and its applications. As a concluding remark, a history of Indian remote sensing is tabulated
