Abstract
In recent years, a rapid growth of research interests in mobile ad hoc networking has been see. The infrastructureless and the dynamic nature of these networks demand an efficient and reliable routing strategy. Due to the mobility and the limited resources in mobile ad hoc networks (MANET), routing is a challenging task and has received tremendous amount of attention from researchers. This has led to the development of many different routing protocols for MANET. It is quite difficult to determine which protocols may perform well under a number of different network scenarios such as network size and topology etc. In this paper an overview of a wide range of the existing routing protocols with a particular focus on their characteristics and functionality have been provided.
